La Ikraha Fiddeen - “There is no Compulsion in Religion”
La Ikraha Fiddeen means, “There is no compulsion in religion”. Or more to the point - ‘There is no compulsion in Islam’.
This (Sura) Verse 2:256 of the Qu’ran is an often (mis)quoted verse by the many so-called ‘moderate’ and ‘peaceful’ Muslims of the world, who continue to proclaim Islam a religion of peace.
In point of fact, no Muslim Scholar, over the past 13 centuries, has ever supported the idea that any non-muslim is free from harm or coercion, if they happen to follow their own conscience and religious convictions.
It is a myth, which even deeply devout muslims blindly believe in and adhere to, completely disregarding the clearly unambiguous words of their prophet and the many subsequent statements issued by the multitude of their Islamic scholars.
Indeed - there may not be any ‘compulsion’ in religion (that is to say, choosing another religion over Islam), but once that choice has been made…. the consequences are dire and bleak. Death or submission.
What Sura 2:256 is basically saying is…… An individual has every right to make their choice - but if you make the wrong choice, you risk death or slavery.
Verse 9:73 abrogates 2:256 with, “O prophet, struggle with the unbelievers and hypocrites, and be thou harsh with them.”
A more precise definition is to be found here:
What do Muslims believe regarding freedom of religious choice? A Koranic verse (2:256) answers: “There is no compulsion in religion.”That sounds clear cut, and the Islamic Center of Southern California insists it is, arguing that it shows how Islam anticipated the principles in the US constitution. The center sees the First Amendment (”Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof”) as based on concepts in the Koran’s no-compulsion verse.
In a similar spirit, a former chief justice of Pakistan, S.A. Rahman, argues that the Koranic phrase contains “a charter of freedom of conscience unparalleled in the religious annals of mankind.”
To a Western sensibility, this interpretation makes intuitive sense. Thus does Alan Reynolds, an economist at the CATO Institute in ,The Washington Times that the verse signifies the Koran “counsels religious tolerance.”
Were it only so simple.
In fact, this deceptively simple phrase historically has had a myriad of meanings. Here are some of them, mostly premodern, deriving from two outstanding recent books, Patricia Crone’s God’s Rule: Government and Islam and Yohanan Friedman’s Tolerance and Coercion in Islam, augmented by my own research.

The apologists for Islam assert and maintain that Muslims are called by the Qu’ran to strive for and to attain peace. But this ‘peace’ will only come about until the Abode of War (Dar al-Harb) is supplanted by the Abode of Islam (Dar al-Islam), which is essentially an all pervasive Islamic rule.
This ‘peace’ will not materialise until all infidels are killed, converted or subjugated.
Muhammad was clear; the Qu’ran is clear; and every Islamic scholar since has made it clear. Islam is a twisted concept which came into being by the sword, and continues to expand and conquer by the sword. Compulsion, within Islam is everywhere, within and without. It is the very heart, core and essence of this misguided cult, and has been throughout its’ entire history, from its’ original inception to present modern day.
It has neither progressed nor evolved over the centuries. Instead, it has remained firmly rooted in the ‘Tribal’ mentality of ‘us against them’. This most definitely includes muslim against muslim, but almost always certainly refers to anyone existing outside of the sphere of Islam. The fate of those unfortunates, are clearly outlined and are defined within the writings of the Qu’ran. And it does not paint a pretty picture of acceptance, tolerance, or inclusiveness.
The phrase, La Ikraha Fiddeen, is a skillfully concealed threat, which provides for no allowances; infringes upon the very sanctity of an individuals’ freedoms; and cares nothing for personal choice or conscience.
It is a licence to kill and to hate.
